La Escondida Residence
Located in a mature oak hammock, the clients of La Escondida requested a house that celebrated the lush vegetation and beauty of the landscape while also providing privacy for the family. The structure is oriented so the views from each room highlight specific trees.
The living spaces were aligned around the outdoor spaces to help connect the family’s everyday life to the oak hammock beyond; such a design has the added benefit of filtering daylight into each room. The cantilevered, master bedroom seemingly floats among the trees serves as one example, where morning sunshine is diffused softly through the leaves.
Spaces like the kitchen and dining area overlook some of the more beautiful trees with great branch qualities, creating intricate shadow play. Operable glass walls intertwine throughout the facade’s solid volumes, carving out long vistas of rich greenery. The lights are seldom turned in the day because these rooms open to the outside welcoming the bounced light.

You see terrazzo everywhere in Miami and Miami Beach once you start paying attention to it: old storefront thresholds, apartment entries, little lobbies, even the corner cigar shop next to our studio in Little Havana.
Miami’s design language is rooted in our sunny but challenging climate, and somewhat wild nature. It is lighter, brighter, and freer. When desired, it can immerse us in nature while still having protective boundaries from the sun, heat, and storms when needed.
At the heart of our practice is listening: listening to the unique dreams and passions of our clients and weaving their visions into the vibrant tapestry of our dynamic city. The client envisioned a home that was thoroughly modern yet grounded in historical architectural precedents; like many of our projects, 101 Hibiscus was crafted to respect past design traditions while capturing aspirations for the future.
