Hibiscus Island Residence was designed for a couple with a great appreciation for modern design and who, after living in an apartment for many years, desired their own home with gardens on a waterfront site on Miami Beach’s Hibiscus Island.
The new residence provides the same panoramic views of the ocean that the clients previously enjoyed in their apartment, but now with additional garden views and direct access to the water and breezes. This home was specially designed to celebrate the amazing natural views from all major spaces as they move through the house.
Strategically designed openings and terraces capture the tropical breezes from the Southeast. The use of deep overhangs, louvers, and porches not only contributes important layers to the design but also provides shade and respite from the intense Florida sun. The garden terrace on the second floor allows daylight to permeate into the house while also creating an additional outdoor space that further brings nature into the home.

Miami’s design language is rooted in our sunny but challenging climate, and somewhat wild nature. It is lighter, brighter, and freer. When desired, it can immerse us in nature while still having protective boundaries from the sun, heat, and storms when needed.
At the heart of our practice is listening: listening to the unique dreams and passions of our clients and weaving their visions into the vibrant tapestry of our dynamic city. The client envisioned a home that was thoroughly modern yet grounded in historical architectural precedents; like many of our projects, 101 Hibiscus was crafted to respect past design traditions while capturing aspirations for the future.
